It operates on a mesh network, meaning each zigbee device can communicate with other zigbee devices, enhancing the reliability and range of your smart home network. Zigbee is renowned for its low power consumption, making it ideal for battery-powered devices like sensors, lights, and motorised blinds. Somfy's zigbee blind motors also offer bi-directional communication giving you more feed back on the status of each blind, such as its current position, and battery power levels if using a Somfy zigbee Li Ion powered motor.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING SOMFY ZIGBEE BLIND MOTORS?
Somfys Zigbee blind motor offer many unique benefits. They Include;
1 Somfy Zigbee Motors have Bi Directional Communication. This basically means that when the Somfy Tahoma Switch hub sends a signal to a blind motor it also receives feedback from the motor with information about the blind in real time. The information can include the position status of the blind, How much battery charge is left in the Somfy Zigbee motor, the speed that the blind is travelling. This information is conveniently relayed back to your smart phone or tablet thru the tahoma switch hub.
2. Total Control from your Smart Phone - Even though Zigbee can be controlled up, down and stop via Somfys "Ysia" (pronounced 'easier') Remote Control, the big benefit comes when operating you zigbee blinds thru your Somfy smart home app. Not only do you have basic operation of your blinds at the touch of your fingers but you can also adjust the blind operational speed, motorised blind's limit settings and position of your blinds as a percentage in relation to the up or down position.
3. Less Power Usage and Longer Battery Charge Duration (Li Ion Option) Somfy's Zigbee Li- Ion Sonesse range of rechargeable motors is a low powered device. It only uses power when signalled to go up or down then switches off saving power. This means the blind motor can go longer between charges..
4. Multiple Control Methods available to operate Somfy Zigbee powered blinds. Yes you have the best of both worlds... Somfy's Zigbee range of motors can be controlled multiple ways....via a smart phone, tablet, voice command thru a home assistant and you can also still set up and operate your Somfy zigbee powered blinds with the Somfy 'Ysia' Remote. (pronounced 'Easier' ) It can be conveniently hung next to your blinds to operate at the touch of a button.
5. Somfy's Zigbee Sonesse Li Ion Motors come with Fast Charge cable and USB-C recharge port. For anyone who has used Somfys RTS Sonesse 30 motors or other branded rechargeable blind motor brands, you will understand that the charging port on the blind motor head is quite small and the plug needs to go in the correct way otherwise you risk damaging the pins on the charger connector or port itself. The Somfy Zigbee Li Ion motors comes with a newly designed motor head which incorporates a USB-C port which is more robust and easier to plug in with less chance of damaging the connectors. Another benefit of the Zigbee range of Li-Ion motors is the fast battery charge time. The Somfy Sonesse 28 only requires 1.5hrs to fully charge. This is a vast improvement from the Sonesse 30 RTS which has a charge time of 4hrs.
6. Potential to extend communication range. Zigbee is a short range wireless communication standard like Bluetooth and WiFi. Zigbees range can be extended significantly by creating a network of Zigbee devices thru your home or office that communicate with each other in a mesh network. With Zigbee protocol you have the ability to build large spread out networks. This offers many potential benefits for motorised window furnishings in both home and building automation.
7. Somfy zigbee 3.0 products can communicate with other Zigbee devices. Zigbee 3.0, which is a unified Zigbee profile with a universal language which allows other smart objects to work together. Its interoperability allows other Zigbee products from different companies to integrate and communicate together seamlessly. Benefits include voice command operation of blinds via Alexia, Apple Home Pod, Google Nest Etc.
8. Easy to Set Up. You do not have to be a tech wizard to set up Somfy's Zigbee blind automation. Using the Somfy Pro App Somfy will walk you thru each step to connect, integrate and set up each and every motorised blind.
9. Reliable, Secure and comes with a 5 Year Warranty. Somfy's Zigbee product range are not only cutting edge, the Zigbee 3.0 protocol they use is a secure encrypted and reliable network backed by Somfy's 5 Year Manufacturers Warranty.

Do the Somfy Zigbee motors have a further range of control then the Somfy RTS Motors?YES & NO. It all depends on how the blinds motors have been set up. Somfy's RTS remote controls have a omni directional range of over 20 metres, this includes thru walls & floors. Zigbee motors have an open field range of only 7mtres. If comparing the two protocols with 2 stand alone blinds the RTS would win. However Zigbees range can be greatly extended beyond that of RTS if you created a network of otherZigbee devices that communicate to each other in a mesh network. Zigbee 3.0 Protocol Equipment Roles Explained
Navigating new technology can often feel like stepping into a maze, especially when faced with complex technical jargon and intricate functionalities. At Motorised Blinds Australia we will try to explain the Zigbee 3.0 Protocol Equipment Roles within the mesh network and ecosystem and how it relates to Somfy Zigbee products. Understanding each equipment role will help design a functional and efficient network.
CONTROLLER - (TaHoma Switch)
The controller is the device which forms and manages the network and ecosystem. In this case the Tahoma Switch Smart Hub would act as our controller. The controller also authorises devices to join the network and ecosystem. It allocates addresses for devices and initiates transfer of messages in the network You can only have one controller in each network and ecosystem and it must me mains powered 240V AC.
REPEATER
The repeater is the device which relays the messages within a network. Not only does it scans to find a network to join it also extends and strengthens the radio range within the ecosystem. It relays commands between different repeater and end products. The repeater must be mains powered. Repeaters can come in the form of Smart Plug, Zigbee Light Globes, Smart Assistants Etc.. In the case of Somfy Zigbee products all motors which are mains wired to 240v are designated as repeaters. This include Somfy Sonesse 40 and Glydea Ultra wired motor solutions.
END DEVICE
The end device sits on the edge of the network and only communicates with a single device(its parent). These devices are often battery powered and can include battery operated blind motors switches, sensors and remote controls. Somfy Sonesse 28 and 40 Li-Ion blind motors are end devices. the Somfy Ysia remote control is also an end device.
